The Media and How They Keep Us Informed

The following observations are directly related to political and social findings on how the media in Puerto Rico keep the people informed about various events. These observations can be applied to the media in general, be it radio, TV or press.

The media in Puerto Rico has degraded to a point that they don't really inform the people anymore, they are only publishing rumor, hearsay, and trivial "information"(disinformation) that has no real value or usefulness.

For example, in September 2006 they "inform" us, IN THE FRONT PAGE, that two political opponents are secret lovers. Do I need to know this? I don't think so. It does not really help me in any way. It does not improve my life, and it is just a stupid piece of news. What is really happening in the meantime? A grand jury is investigating the governor. That is the real news!

Another example, not related to politics, can show us how mediocre is the media here in Puerto Rico. Between August and September 2006, there have been two very brief pieces of news telling us that the waters in Puerto Rico are dangerously contaminated. First, the beaches in the northeast have been heavily contaminated by the water company. There was only a brief mention of this in the media, no follow-ups that I know of. Second, the fishes in a river were found dead in September 2006. Same issue here, only a brief mention in the media. No follow-ups, no scandals, none of these reporters did interview anyone to know how the people felt about this.

These two examples are just a sampling of how the media here in Puerto Rico seem to be collaborating with the government and big companies to keep the public dumb and happily ignorant of what is damaging the quality of our lives. Either the media is actively cooperating with the big money enterprises and the government, or they are just simpletons and mediocre who just can't do a better job.
Maybe it is a combination of both of the above.
