Las migajas para el pueblo

Según las apariencias, el pueblo se indigna cada vez que se entera de cómo algunos políticos roban descaradamente. Parece que al pueblo le molesta que los políticos roben, claro está, los del otro partido son los ladrones, ya que mucha gente parece pensar que los candidatos de su partido son inmaculados y perfectos. Algunas personas me han dado la impresión de que no les importa que los políticos roben, siempre y cuando sean los de su partido.

Todo líder necesita apoyo ciertamente, pero no ciego e incondicional para permitirle hacer cuanta cosa se le ocurra. A los líderes hay que apoyarlos con actitud analítica e inteligente, si se desvían de lo correcto hay que reprenderlos, si se mantienen en la vía recta hay que apoyarlos para que se mantengan íntegros.

En donde trabajo, mucha gente se reúne a chismosear sobre las poca vergüenzas que hacen los políticos, pero no va más allá de tan sólo ser una charla de mediodía, al igual que hablan de un asunto familiar o tal vez de una novela. Cuando digo poca vergüenzas, me refiero a bobadas inconsecuentes que haga algún político, por ejemplo: (1) que se case algún político, (2) que hay uno enamorado de otra del partido contrario. Estos temas irrelevantes son explotados extensamente por la prensa cuando quieren distraer la atención de asuntos de mayor importancia, y es una estrategia muy efectiva, ya que la gente se ocupa de hablar de la tontería, efectivamente olvidándose de atender otros temas más importantes, ya que los consideran aburridos.

Divide y vencerás es una estrategia bien conocida por los políticos de cada partido. El pueblo de Puerto Rico está dividido de un modo muy parejo en facciones que solamente sirven para vitorear a sus respectivos líderes. ¿Cuándo se detienen estas personas a reflexionar: “qué pasos toman nuestros líderes por el bienestar de Puerto Rico”? Nuestros líderes no necesitan ser geniales estrategas para dividir al pueblo en bandos de fuerza igual pero opuesta. Cuando surge un tema de importancia fundamental, sólo tienen que atarlo a los colores por partido (bien conocidos aquí en Puerto Rico), y la atención del pueblo se dirige a refunfuñar y recriminar a los del partido contrario. De este modo cancelan casi toda oposición y ellos se encargan de reducir a nada los esfuerzos de los pocos que sí los reten en sus decisiones.

Las personas que controlan el proceso de toma de decisiones en el gobierno no llegan ni tan siquiera a un 2% de la población. Si el pueblo se une y exige mayor responsabilidad de nuestros líderes, ellos tendrán que responder y actuar a favor del pueblo. Eso es lo que temen estos líderes. Temen un pueblo unido que exija que se respeten sus derechos. Este tipo de líder, que gobierna por divide y vencerás, no busca el bienestar del pueblo, tan sólo les interesa su beneficio inmediato.

Si el pueblo no se une para frenar los abusos del gobierno, no podrán quejarse cuando los políticos se repartan generosamente el botín de Puerto Rico y al pueblo solamente le arrojen migajas, para que se conformen como pordioseros. Como se decía en un anuncio hace tiempo: “no se queje, si no se queja”.

Mother I write you this letter to let you know I am fine and healthy.

Yesterday the president, the Magnificent Don Alan Kran was on the radio delivering his Message to the Glorious Independent Republic of Puerto Rico. Lucky me, I was able to hear the message on the store nearest to my apartment, my radio is out of batteries, and it is so difficult to find them these days that everything is rationed. His message was not good, he said: “Brothers, sisters, fellow citizens of our Glorious Independent Republic, this day I am bearer of unhappy news, we are going to ration the gasoline, you will only be able to buy gasoline on the days allotted to you by the government, meat and coffee will be rationed too. But not everything is bad news, rejoice in the thought that bread will be available in vast amounts for all of you, each of you will be able to buy two portions per day”. Well, he does speak the truth about bread, I eat bread every day, but the ovens in the bakeries don’t work daily, fuel is scarce in the Glorious Independent Republic, so the bakers cook a big batch of bread to last three to four days and that’s what we eat most of the time. Lots of bread to eat, I love the days when it is fresh from the oven. People will wait three to four hours in line just to have freshly baked bread. Since most people cannot afford cars anymore I see no use to announcing that gasoline will be rationed. Less than fifteen percent of the population is able to afford a car.

The health services of the Glorious Independent Republic have been improving lately, I only have to wait two weeks to get the medical supplies to control my diabetes. Now don’t you worry about me, I ask for them with enough anticipation. The only thing I resent about the health services is that the cleanliness of the building is not what it used to be. The medical building Health Care Facility Pedro Albizu Campos is in worse shape than Centro Medico, its former name when we were part of the odious empire or so the President calls it.

Yesterday I was talking to your cousin David. He is a lucky guy! He is earning 10,000 albizus(100 U.S. dollars) a month! Wow! He’s got lots of money to buy whatever he wants. He bought himself a shiny new bicycle to go to his job. Now he pokes fun at those who use public transport to go to work. He deserves his good luck! He is superintendent of the Carolina District, in charge of forty-two schools. He is a really important man!

I am still working at the Office of Public Security. It is a poorly paid job. I only earn 5,100 albizus(51 U.S. dollars) a month. At least I earn more than the average worker! The Dominican Republic poses a threat to our jobs. Since these Dominicans sell themselves cheaper than Puerto Ricans, we have lost many jobs to the Dominican Republic.

Remember mom that I am in good health, with lots of bread to eat daily and meat and coffee every once in a while. I love you very much.

A lame-duck Congress has begun to limp back into Washington. Among its members, both the vindicated and the vanquished are acutely aware that the voters are restless; that they want meaningful action on thorny issues that their representatives and senators have repeatedly been unwilling or unable to address.On Wednesday, a Senate committee will conduct a hearing on one such issue: namely, the conundrum posed by 108 years of federal disenfranchisement imposed upon U.S. citizens residing in Puerto Rico.

That protracted denial of a fundamental civil right cannot be dismissed as some back-burner brouhaha percolating on a remote Caribbean island. Why? Because this unfinished business of American democracy directly affects the destiny of nearly 4,000,000 American citizens -- a figure that exceeds the populations of close to half of the 50 states.With the single specific exception of the nation's capital, the Constitution countenances only two types of U.S. political jurisdiction: One is states; the other is territories. Puerto Rico is a territory; and in territories, federal voting rights are nonexistent.

During the late 18th century, propelled by an unquenchable thirst for justice, the peoples of 13 colonies endured immense hardship and terrible sacrifice in order to free themselves from the stifling bonds of imperialism. Then, ironically, a dozen decades later, the very nation they created found itself assuming the mantle of empire.As a consequence of the Spanish-American War, literally thousands of far-flung islands fell under the domain of the Stars and Stripes. This freshly acquired territory prompted a paradigm shift.From 1898 on, with the acquiescence of a bitterly divided Supreme Court, the executive and legislative branches of the federal government began to practice a kind of apartheid: for the inhabitants of these former Spanish colonies, inoperative would be a long-standing tradition to the effect that territorial status should logically be a prelude to U.S. statehood. Instead, it was decided that Uncle Sam would rule indefinitely over those possessions -- and that the Constitution's full panoply of rights would indefinitely be denied to their inhabitants.That same approach has been applied to every territory acquired after 1898. U.S. Appeals Court Judge Juan Torruella has eloquently condemned this imperial paradigm as "the doctrine of separate and unequal."

Today, statehood has been granted to each and every U.S. territory -- except to those acquired after the Spanish-American War. This stark dichotomy is no coincidence.Last December, the George W. Bush White House buttressed the findings of previous administrations (both Democratic and Republican) by forthrightly confronting that dichotomy: A "President's Task Force on Puerto Rico's Status" urged Congress to facilitate decisive action. In its report, the task force correctly affirmed that the sole alternatives to territorial status for Puerto Rico are separate sovereignty as a discrete country and shared sovereignty as a fully integrated component of the United States.In response to the White House panel's recommendations, bipartisan bills are now pending in the House and Senate.

The ball is thus situated in precisely the proper court, given that the U.S. Constitution unequivocally stipulates, "The Congress shall have power to dispose of and make all needful rules and regulations respecting the territory or other property belonging to the United States."By initiating the deliberative process proposed by the task force, Congress will not only discharge a constitutional obligation but will emphatically reiterate the American people's commitment to achieving an ever more perfect union.

President Bush himself said it best. In his second inaugural address, he delivered this inspiring message: "America has need of idealism and courage, because we have essential work at home -- the unfinished work of American freedom. In a world moving toward liberty, we are determined to show the meaning and promise of liberty."May Capitol Hill heed that clarion call.Pedro Rossello, a pediatric surgeon, was Governor of Puerto Rico from 1993 until 2001 and is now a member of the Puerto Rico Senate. Whose independence?

Compare the process of independence of the United States with what is happening today in Puerto Rico. When the United States was struggling for its independence from Britain, there were people who honestly believed that they would be better keeping their loyalties with the King of England and there were others who thought that separation from England was the wiser choice. These people openly voiced their thoughts and feelings and there were irreconcilable differences among those groups. It should have been that way! Both groups were on opposing extremes. They could not be independent and loyal to the King at the same time.

Come to Puerto Rico in the 21st century. Some time ago I noticed that the PPD (Partido Popular Democrático, which is not very populist or democratic, by the way) had opened its arms (read claws) to associations that are openly favoring independence, and if that were not bad enough, these people also seem to be communists Fidel Castro-style. These kind of people are very clever at recruiting imbeciles who will do the dirty job for them. They send their obedient puppets to commit violent acts against innocent citizens and to desecrate symbols and institutions that represent us.

The people who want independence for Puerto Rico have joined forces with the worst kind of terrorist there is. They are clever and unscrupulous. They assemble behind closed doors to plan the ruin of their enemies and to steal our freedom and rights. They believe in rule by force and fear.

The idea behind comparing the independence of the United States to the efforts of the groups which favor independence for Puerto Rico is simple. The process of independence for the United States was debated openly and the majority of the people favored independence. But here in Puerto Rico there are groups working behind the public's view. The groups favoring independence are working in treacherous and deceitful ways so that they can bring independence even if they are a minority, even if the people will not support them. They have been working for years to place themselves in the key positions where they can do the most harm. These people just want to steal our freedom so that they and their small group of fiends can enjoy all the benefits that a subjugated populace will bring them.
P.S. The title was initially “The Independence of the Fool”, later I changed it to “The Independence of the Traitor”, but since this independence is not for you or me, it is more fitting to ask whose independence? Who will benefit from the lies that these people feed us continually? Only the rich, and those who are close to them.

El pava-porte

Como en el Partido Popular nada ocurre por casualidad, el coqueteo y el timoneo hacia la república ha llevado al ELA a emitir un Certificado de Ciudadanía Puertorriqueña que para todos los efectos prácticos constituye un pasaporte ilegal, una carta de tránsito, un salvoconducto y un reto a la soberanía nacional de Estados Unidos como único regente de la naturalización de todos los puertorriqueños y custodio de nuestras fronteras.

¿Qué necesidad tiene el Departamento de Estado colonial de declarar por escrito que los puertorriqueños somos ciudadanos puertorriqueños, si el Artículo 5 de la Ley de Relaciones Federales aprobada por el Congreso, cuyo texto incorpora el Acta Jones, expresamente dispone que todos los ciudadanos de Puerto Rico son ciudadanos de Estados Unidos y que todos los ciudadanos de Estados Unidos que residan en la Isla por un año también son ciudadanos de Puerto Rico? ¿Por qué se le concede a Juan Mari Bras una redundancia legal que por ejemplo no se le concede automáticamente a Norma Burgos Andújar, boricua que nació en los Estados Unidos continentales? Si la puertorriqueñidad es tan natural y personal como es, ¿por qué no también reconocer mediante certificado que somos seres humanos, hombres, mujeres o terrícolas?

Para entender este experimento en politiquería de altas apuestas, debemos hacer un recuento. El Partido Popular no lo dice, pero nos lleva de cabeza a la separación y a la independencia. Calla sobre ello, porque la mayoría del país no está lista para embarcarse. Por lo tanto, hacen y timonean por lo bajo. Ahí está el récord:

El Partido Popular sacó a la Marina de Vieques a patás y aplaudió cuando los Estados Unidos levantaron anclas de Roosevelt Roads. El mismo Partido Popular que ha renegado la Constitución y los cuatro pilares del ELA y que ahora solicita a diestra y siniestra la convocatoria para una Asamblea Constituyente y un nuevo gobierno unicameral para empezar de nuevo. El mismo Partido Popular que reniega la Corte Federal establecida por la Ley de Relaciones Federales; y que en el año 91 prohibió el uso del inglés.

La emisión del pava-porte no es casualidad, sino causalidad. En el mes de enero del 2006 en reacción virulenta a la estocada que en diciembre 22 el Informe Bush de Casa Blanca le dio al ELA, Acevedo Vilá insistió tajantemente en una Asamblea Constituyente. El presidente del PPD había sido emplazado el pasado 26 de diciembre por los alcaldes populares a exigir la libre asociación. Cirilo Tirado expresó el 28 de diciembre que era necesario que Estados Unidos haga un "acto de contrición" sobre Puerto Rico y que la Pava "le explique al americano lo mucho que le costamos". Tony Fas, José Aponte y Carlos Vizcarrondo también exigieron la soberanía.

Willie Miranda propuso demandar a Estados Unidos en daños y perjuicios por haber engañado al país. "Busquemos –dijo el potencial sucesor de Aníbal– la soberanía y nuestro espacio en el mundo". "La ciudadanía americana no es tan importante, tampoco la moneda común, el mercado y menos la defensa común", señaló Willie. El alcalde de Caguas llegó al extremo de pedir que nos asociáramos con la Unión Europea. Eudaldo Báez Galib tomó el toro por los cuernos y el 13 de enero exhortó a su partido a crear una crisis política para que Washington atienda los reclamos, y si no lo hace, la Pava debe liberar a sus electores para que escojan la independencia. Dicho y hecho. A hacer crisis.

Así las cosas, la junta de gobierno del PPD respondió en enero 5 aceptando que el ELA no resolvió el status, reafirmándose en la Asamblea Constituyente y exigiéndole al Congreso un Puerto Rico soberano que para confundir, llaman, ELA desarrollado. El 17 de febrero, el ciudadano Juan Mari Bras le dio la bienvenida al proyecto del Partido Popular exigiendo en el Congreso una Asamblea Constituyente para dirigir a Puerto Rico a la libre asociación mediante tratado. Mari Bras le dio la bendición al nuevo giro de la Pava, diciendo que "es necesario bregar con un frente común". Entonces, cosas extrañas e inusitadas comenzaron a ocurrir en comuna con los separatistas.

A renglón seguido, el Departamento de Justicia colonial demandó al gobierno de Estados Unidos y comenzó a investigar a los agentes del FBI por el operativo que provocó la muerte del líder machetero Filiberto Ojeda Ríos y por los allanamientos y abusos perpetrados en casa de presuntos macheteros. El PPD solicitó al Congreso una pesquisa. En marzo 29, los aliados Hostosianos del Partido Popular provocaron un motín en el Capitolio y quebraron la bóveda de la Constitución del ELA.

Casualmente, el 9 de abril el Secretario de Estado, Fernando Bonilla, anunció que se habían disparado los pedidos de pasaporte americano "por temores infundados" y el Departamento de Estado colonial comenzó a racionar la tramitación de los mismos exigiendo citas previas, largas filas y un aumento en los costos. En abril 14 la Comisión de Derechos Civiles dirigida por populares, afirmó que citaría so pena de desacato a los agentes del FBI para que rindieran cuentas sobre los operativos antimacheteros. En mayo quebró y cerró el gobierno del ELA. Los sindicatos pipulares demandaron el IVU de 7% y se aliaron con el Régimen. En medio de la crisis, Casa Blanca volvió a reafirmar que descarta cualquier versión del ELA desarrollado, y ante el obstruccionismo del Departamento de Estado colonial, anunció que los pasaportes de Estados Unidos podrían obtenerse en los correos, ya que no había citas disponibles en Estado hasta enero del 2007.

En mayo 22, Miguel Hernández Agosto criticó "la cultura de la dependencia y el problema de la prominencia de los fondos federales" y exhortó a su partido a dejarla atrás. Luis Raúl Torres aseguró que el Pueblo popular está listo para pedir la soberanía. En junio el Partido Popular se apartó de su política de 50 años y compareció ante el Comité de Descolonización de las Naciones Unidas a solicitar que se reabriera el caso colonial de Puerto Rico y a exigir la libre asociación. El 10 de julio, Báez Galib sometió una resolución dándole a Estados Unidos un plazo de 5 años para desarrollar el ELA so pena de que el Partido Popular libere a sus electores por opciones soberanas.

Y ahora en octubre, aparece el pava-porte de Mari Bras. Aunque Bhatia le aseguró a los Federales que el pasaporte no representa nada, 6 legisladores del Partido Popular pidieron que se les certificará su puertorriqueñidad y los Hostosianos y Mari Bras aseguraron que utilizarían el documento para retar la autoridad federal y el pilar de la ciudadanía común americana. Todo ello por un "pava-porte" o "Mari-porte"...

San Juan, — El Secretario de la Gobernación, Jorge Silva Puras, entregó al Buró Federal de Investigaciones de Estados Unidos una serie de documentos requeridos por un gran jurado con respecto a una antigua colaboradora del Gobernador Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, dama que es pieza importante en la pesquisa sobre donativos políticos al oficialismo.

“Yo los entregué, los entregué el viernes”, dijo Silva Puras a El Diario La Prensa en referencia a los documentos solicitados sobre Eneidy Coreano y toda una serie de empresas y personas vinculadas al inversionista político de Filadelfia Robert Feldman, cuyas relaciones con Acevedo Vilá, su gobierno y el oficialista Partido Popular Democrático son objeto de la investigación del Departamento de Justicia de EE.UU. .

La figura de Coreano ha levantado toda una ola de informaciones y rumores escabrosos, debido al interés mostrado por el FBI en tratar de inquirir por asuntos que van desde funciones profesionales hasta su vida privada.

Coreano estaba a cargo del calendario de Acevedo Vilá cuando era Comisionado Residente en Washington y luego de que éste se convirtiera en Gobernador trabajó durante varios meses en la Administración de Asuntos Federales de Puerto Rico. Según explicó Silva Puras, el FBI le había interrogado ya sobre ella y entre otras cosas le preguntaron que si la conocía.

Silva Puras, segundo al mando en el Palacio de Santa Catalina, expresó que no espera tener que testificar de nuevo ante el gran jurado el jueves de esta semana, fecha para cuando tendría que estar a disposición del panel investigativo según el “subpoena”.

Explicó que entiende que con la entrega de documentos será suficiente y, de hecho, tiene planificado un viaje oficial a Nueva York para ese día. Luego, concluida su primera comparecencia ante el gran jurado, le entregaron el requerimiento de información en el que se incluía el nombre de Eneudi Coreano y, en efecto, dijo que encontró correos electrónicos que tuvo con ella la entonces funcionaria de la oficina de Puerto Rico en Washington cuando él era Secretario de Desarrollo Económico.

Este es una de las personas sobre las que el FBI ha requerido información

En plena campaña electoral el hoy gobernador, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, tenía contratado al ex vicepresidente de la empresa de Filadelfia Dental One, Jorge Velasco Mella, como consultor de su entonces Oficina del Comisionado Residente.

Así lo evidencia copia del contrato 2005-000031 obtenido por El Nuevo Día, en el que se establece que el ejecutivo, ya viviendo en Bayamón, y Acevedo Vilá firmaron el acuerdo el 15 de julio de 2004 para que el primero ayudase "en la entrada de datos de la página de Internet del Comisionado" y atendiese "asuntos militares y otros". Sus servicios serían pagados a razón de $2,000 por 80 horas mensuales, y tenía que rendir informes detallados de cada gestión realizada.

Velasco Mella es una de las personas sobre las cuales el Negociado Federal de Investigaciones (FBI) ha solicitado información para el Gran Jurado federal que investiga el presunto esquema de donativos ilegales a las campañas de Acevedo Vilá y contrataciones relacionadas del 2002 al 2005. El más reciente requerimiento sobre el ejecutivo fue el hecho hace dos semanas al secretario de la Gobernación, Jorge Silva Puras. Éste dijo que sólo encontró una carta de Velasco Mella, de principios de cuatrienio, solicitándole trabajo en la Compañía de Fomento Industrial.
Según dijo, refirió el resumé a la entonces directora ejecutiva, Marie Roberts, y que nunca se le dio trabajo.

En el 2002 Velasco Mella donó $5,000 al comité de campaña de Acevedo Vilá, de los cuales le fueron devueltos $2,000 por exceder los límites, y los empleados de su entonces patrono, Dental One, y de compañías relacionadas, donaron más de $60,000 en ese período.

Ese año aparecen registrados como donantes de Acevedo Vilá desde las secretarias hasta los principales oficiales de la empresa, quienes también han figurado en los requerimientos de investigación del FBI como Cándido Negrón, Robert Feldman, Salvatore Avanzato y Filiz Avanzato, según la página cibernética campaign money.com.

Hasta el momento el Gobernador ha sostenido que no otorgó contratos a ninguna de las empresas investigadas, y que no ha hecho concesiones a nadie a cambio de donativos. Juanita Colombani, su portavoz, aclaró ayer que hasta el momento no se le habían hecho preguntas sobre la contratación de personas específicas.

I was wondering if this could be true or just my mistake. Our beloved leaders seem to have a strong repulse toward foreigners. They don't just repudiate America, but everything that is not from Puerto Rico, except Argentina, Cuba, and Europe (the places with royal tradition).

They love power because it makes them feel that they are kings. And it shows by the way they spend money on their clothing. I think that nobody needs a $ 3,000.00+ suit, unless you are very rich and pay it out of your pocket, or you are corrupt and steal it from your company's budget.

I don't know if this applies to all politicians, but certainly, it applies to most politicians in Puerto Rico, they love to throw away money in expensive plans that produce nothing of value. Most of their expensive plans produce lots of money for their friends. They don't tell you this, we come to know about this when power changes hands, or when politicians of minor importance fall in disfavor with the big leaders. I have never seen the big leaders go to jail.

These leaders also have a tendency to glorify and make martyrs out of terrorists who will not hesitate to kill innocent people. They make a point of naming buildings after deceased terrorists and then they call them "Noble Patriots".

Our leaders are so corrupt that I wonder how much money they are stealing right now. They are advancing in their plot to steal our job rights, and they have screwed so badly our retirement funds that you will have to work forever.

If you want independence with this kind of leadership be ready for chains, slavehood and extreme poverty, while your masters bathe in riches. If that is what you want.
